BELON TIDAK MELETUP APABILA DIBAKAR DENGAN API

(‘BALLOON DOESN’T BURST WHEN WE LIGHT UP WITH FIRE’) Bagaimana melakukannya? (‘How to do it?’) 1. Bahan – bahan yang diperlukan (‘What Do I Need?’) 2 belon, pemetik api/,mancis, lilin, air. (‘2 balloons, a lighter/matches, a candle, water.’) 2. Tiup belon yang pertama dan ikat. Masukkan 1/3 cawan air ke dalam belon yang satu lagi, dan kemudian tiup belon tersebut dan ikat. (‘Inflate one of the balloons and tie it closed. Place 1/3 cup of water in the other balloon, and then inflate it and tie it shut.’) 3. Nyalakan lilin menggunakan pemetik api ataupun mancis dan letakkan ia di bawah belon yang pertama. Pastikan api mengenai belon. Perhatikan apa yang berlaku? Belon itu akan meletup. (‘Light a match and hold it under the first balloon. Allow the flame to touch the balloon. What happens? The balloon breaks, perhaps even before the flame touches it.’) 4. Nyalakan mancis dan nyalakan lilin semula. Letakkan ia secara langsung dengan di bawah belon kedua yang mengandungi air. Pastikan nyalaan menyentuh belon. Apakah yang akan terjadi? Belon itu tidak akan meletup. Anda mungkin melihat kawasan hitam pada bahagian luar belon yang dipanaskan oleh lilin. (‘Light another match. Hold it directly under the water in the second balloon. Allow the flame to touch the balloon. What happens with this balloon? The balloon doesn't break. You may even see a black patch of soot form on the outside of the balloon above the flame.’) Bagaimana ia berlaku? (‘How this works?’) Mengapa belon yang tidak mengandungi air meletup apabila dipanaskan? Nyalaan akan memanaskan sesuatu dengan membekalkan haba. Dalam eksperimen tadi, kedua – dua belon dipanaskan. Getah belon yang tidak mengandungi air menjadi panas apabila dipanaskan, dan ia menjadi terlalu lemah untuk menghalang tekanan di dalam belon yang juga semakin tinggi. Gas di dalam belon mengembang dan ini menyebabkan belon meletup. (‘Why does the balloon with no water break in the flame? The flame heats whatever is placed in it. The rubber of the balloon without water becomes so hot, that it becomes too weak to resist the pressure of the air inside the balloon – air expands when heated.’) Bagaimana pula belon yang mengandungi air boleh bertahan daripada meletup apabila dipanaskan? Apabila air dipanaskan, air akan menyerap haba dari nyalaan. Kemudian getah belon tidak menjadi terlalu panas. Getah belon tidak menjadi lemah, dan juga gas dalam belon tidak mengembang dan belon tidak akan meletup. (‘How does the balloon with water in it resist breaking in the flame? When water inside the balloon is placed in the flame, the water absorbs most of the heat from the flame. Then, the rubber of the balloon does not become very hot. Because the rubber does not become hot, it does not weaken, and the balloon does not break.’) Air merupakan penyerap haba yang baik. Ia akan mengambil masa yang lama untuk mengubah suhu air. Ia mengambil masa sepuluh minit untuk haba menaikkan suhu 1 gram air sebanyak 1°C yang mana sama banyakkan haba yang diperlukan untuk menaikkan suhu 1 gram besi.
